Putting patient experience first

In such a competitive industry, patient experience and well-being come first. Patients have so many options for their elective surgeries. They look for healing environments with low infection rates. The doctors at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (KCOI) were ready to improve the care spaces for their patients. But they needed a better option than conventional construction.

How would they continue to care for patients during the renovation and adjacent new construction? What about dust and noise? How could they make their space agile enough to expand their patient care in years to come?

The design of an orthopaedic institute is unique. Patients are more active than a typical hospital. Spaces need to accommodate physio therapy. Wheelchairs are common and surfaces need to be especially durable. All of the KCOI staff provided input into the design to meet these unique needs. But as Kevin Purvis, Director of Healthcare Planning at Pulse Design Group puts it, “you just cannot expect [everyone] to understand two dimensional drawings. You can review those drawings with them a dozen times and they're going to get surprised when it gets built.” With ICE® visualizations, all the staff could see how the space would suit their needs. And they didn’t have to understand blueprints to do it.

When construction was underway, it was so quick and quiet that patients weren’t disturbed. Dust and debris was kept at bay. The DIRTT spaces are so easy to clean, that infection rates will stay incredibly low at the hospital. As one of the doctors put it, “by the time we looked at time savings and the lack of all the dust, you get something that was much nicer at a very similar price.”

One of the biggest issues with orthopedic joint replacements is infection. So having a facility like this where the infection rate is so small is really important to patients. A lot of patients seek out this institute for that very purpose.
