Smart Storage, On Schedule

How casework supports students and faculty at West Hills Primary School.

Storage was an issue at West Hills Primary School. The cabinets, that also doubled as space dividers, had been there a while. Ask the principal about it and she remembers them from when she was a student there. Since the school was in the midst of an HVAC overhaul and a floorplate redesign, the team wanted to upgrade their storage solutions as well.

The challenge: they had just 12 weeks to do it all. “We wanted to get it done in one summer,” says Sam Kirk, director of finance and operations for the Armstrong School District. “We didn't want to delay the start of school. We didn't want to have to bring in portable classrooms and displace the children.”

But when typical casework lead times are six to eight weeks (or even longer), that didn’t leave much breathing room to get from site dimensions to installed product before the bell rang for back to school. DIRTT casework has 21-day lead times. That means cabinets and cubbies could be on-site and ready to install when needed without slowing down construction. And because it’s part of the DIRTT Construction System, installation is fast, integration is seamless, and the veneer casework matches doors and walls exactly.

(We) added around the perimeter, an area for cubbies, an area for storage where they teachers can keep all their materials for technology… That adds to all that instructional space within that room.
