The Challenge
Allina Health’s 56-patient neurology unit in the Abbot Northwestern Hospital, took advantage of DIRTT’s ability to scale while maintaining flexibility. The features of our modular construction system let Abbott integrate an ICU and neurosurgery center tailored to complex neurological conditions. Beyond clinical performance, Abbott needed calming, patient-centered spaces to reduce stress and support healing. Adaptability was essential so rooms could evolve as therapies and technology do.
Our Solution
The new care rooms put biophilic design principles to work. They’re airy and bright and use wood-veneer-style Thermofoil and nature-inspired graphic wall panels to create the desired aesthetic.
DIRTT integrated headwalls deployed in the patient rooms use the same finishes as the rest of our system. This variety delivers the design freedom to seamlessly tie in with the look while delivering the required functionality. Shipped from the factory with medical gas outlets already in place speeds up the installation time. Our wall system offers a universally compatible mount allowing devices and accessories to be easily installed and relocated saving time, reducing maintenance costs, and improving ergonomics.
The Impact
Abbott Northwestern manages the complexity of treating neurology patients, but building with DIRTT keeps facilities management simple. Intelligent software and industry-best lead times kept the project on budget and on schedule. This is crucial to delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring revenue generation. DIRTT also supported the sustainability goals of the health system. Wall assemblies on this project were made with 72% recycled material and more than 12 thousand pounds of waste was diverted from the landfill. On top of that, DIRTT is designed with removable wall panels and flexible medical gas for easy adaptability. So, when technology or patient needs change over time, the space can evolve without creating excess waste.
We've only been in for three months, but I have to tell you, I have not had one call for service on this floor. The providers that work the floor are effusive in their praise. Our patient experience feedback is off the charts.”
