The Challenge
The Conrad B. Duberstein US Bankruptcy Courthouse has been in operation since 1892 and it was time for an update. The overarching goal was to create a space that could support smart building technology while retaining the historic architecture. Naturally, this had to be accomplished on time and on budget.
Our Solution
DIRTT’s extensive experience with heritage building projects meant we ticked all the boxes. Precision manufacturing components off-site doesn’t just maintain quality control and cost certainty. Building with exacting standards down to the millimeter means DIRTT can connect to the base building without impacting the existing elements. This is ideal for buildings with construction restrictions due to their heritage designation.
Plus, once shipped to site, our components are assembled with minimal dust and debris. Our modular wall assemblies provide the backbone for a thoughtful, accelerated transformation. Durable MDF panels complete the look while serving a practical purpose: providing easy access to the wall cavity when it's time to upgrade technology.
The Impact
The renovated Duberstein Courthouse pairs 19th‑century heritage with 21st‑century performance. Interiors are technology-ready from Day One, with accessible infrastructure that offers operational savings on Day Two and beyond. The result was recognized nationally, with the courthouse winning a 2022 GSA Design Award.
This project is an excellent example of both respecting the historic nature and designing the space in a contemporary way that feels fresh and relevant, but also harmonious.”
