In the wake of COVID -19, healthcare spaces across North America were at capacity. To solve this challenge, The Boldt Company and HGA architects teamed up to create a modular, prefabricated, inpatient critical-care environment called STAAT Mod™. Short for strategic, temporary, acuity-adaptable treatment, STAAT Mod is factory-made to accelerate lead times for constructing healthcare spaces. They knew from experience that building off-site was faster, safer and more efficient than building on-site.

Outfitting the inside of these structures using conventional construction methods meant drywall, tape and mud. It also meant an eight-hour drying time between stages. Boldt didn’t have the time to wait or the space to park these modules as they dried. When it came time to update the original STAAT Mod design, the team thought of DIRTT.

Like Boldt and HGA, DIRTT understands the value of off-site construction. While Boldt is fabricating the exterior of these structures, DIRTT is manufacturing the interiors in our factory. The solutions are shipped to Boldt’s factory where they are precision installed. And instead of taking two and a half days to factor in drying time, the module is completed in a couple of hours.

But saving time in the factory wasn’t the only hurdle. Boldt had the same challenge in the field. Each STAAT Mod module measures 12 feet across. Since patient rooms extend beyond this 12-foot boundary, there needed to be a seamless way to connect them. Drywall requires hours of mudding and dry time. DIRTT’s precision-manufactured modular approach sped up that part of construction, too. The result was 71 acuity-adaptable patient rooms with nurse stations, bathrooms, and support space that were ready to serve patients just eight weeks after DIRTT solutions arrived on-site.

STAAT Mod benefited from what DIRTT perfected over the last decade working in healthcare. Integrated headwalls with UL-listed med-gas drops are easy to install and maintain. Gasketed surfaces are easy to clean and improve infection prevention and control. And with built-in flexibility, DIRTT systems offer the option to implement positive and negative pressure requirements for high-acuity environments.
