The coolest place on campus
When the University of Iowa was re-purposing their Learning Commons, they were reluctant DIRTT could meet their complex challenges. Their building had damage from the Iowa flood of 2008. Structural steel support columns were densely packed throughout the space. Yet, being able to customize with DIRTT let the university realize their goals. They worked around the columns by developing a custom layout. They designed a mix of informal study nooks and private collaboration spaces. The best part? The extremely custom project didn’t come with the custom price tag you’d see with conventional construction.
The flexibility factor was big for this project. The University wants to stay ahead of the curve and give their students the best experience possible. With DIRTT, they knew they could swap out their integrated technology as newer models came on the market. And they’ll never have to cut drywall when they needed to rewire.
Students now have a functional space at their fingertips. Thanks to eye-catching graphics and a bright, comfortable ambiance, the space doubles as a wellness hub. In fact, it was voted the “coolest place on campus”. It’s no surprise that the University has made this is a critical stop on their enrollment tours each year.
Everything was custom. I think that’s the magic of this system, there’s nothing standard.Kent Lutz, Architects Smith Melzer
